Selection Test (Daily Grade)

Begin reading this story with your child on WEDNESDAY night. We will read it in class Wednesday and Thursday. The comprehension test for this story will be Friday.

Life in the Forest

We can find life all around the forest. It is a busy place! Sun shines on the leaves and helps them grow. Many bugs like eating leaves. Yum, yum! The bugs eat and eat. A woodpecker sits on a branch. Peck! Peck! Peck! The woodpecker pecks for bugs. This huge log is soft and damp. Water has made the log rot. Small bugs made a home in the log. This bird hops on the log and pecks at it. Yum, yum! It gets bugs from the log. Nuts grow on trees and then fall all around. Squirrels find the nuts and eat them. The black bear eats leaves, grass, and nuts. It likes grubs too. Grubs are small bugs under rocks and logs. Many plants have shapes like tubes. Small hummingbirds like to sip food and water from these plants. Hummingbirds can catch bugs for food too. The forest is filled with life. Many animals and plants call it home. It is a busy place!

Oral Reading Test (Test Grade)

Your child will have to read a list of words and sentences to me for a test grade. These words and sentences will test skills learned the week before. This gives your child two weeks to full learn the skills taught before testing. The words and sentences will come from the below list of words and the two stories. Please have your child read these stories and words to you each night.

Nuts for the Cake

Mom is mixing a cake. “I must get nuts.” “Kate, take this note to Rose. I hope Rose has nuts.” Rose is working at her stove. “Take those nuts, Kate, and put them in this sack.” Rose hands Max a bone. Jan is jumping rope. “Can I jump?” asks Kate. “I must go home.” “Where is that sack?” Jan asks. “Here it is. Max has it.” “Mom, Rose gave us nuts and a bone.”

A Ride to the Lake

Tom rides bikes with Mike and Dad. Mike and Dad ride up the hill. Tom didn’t want to ride up it. Dad calls Tom. “It isn’t a big hill.” “Ride up it, Tom,” calls Dad. “I’m going as fast as I can.” “That path has rocks on it.” “It isn’t a safe place to ride.” “We can walk back. It’ll be fine.” “I’m glad we came,” Tom smiles. “This is fun.”
